Do Yourself and Your Pets A Favor, Look Into Your Pet Insurance Options
August 4, 2016
Pet insurance is a really underrated line of business. It seems like the only time people think if it is when they need it, and do not have it. This is true of all lines of insurance, I suppose, but most people do not have a clue pet insurance is even an option.
The total first-year cost of owning a dog is $1,270 and for a cat it's $1,070. Having a pet can cost you over $1,000 in the first year, and well over $500 each additional year. Depending on the food you buy and your actual medical expenses, the costs could be much higher.
I have heard a lot of arguments against pet insurance - that it is expensive, or that it does not cover anything. While this may not be far from the truth about certain pet insurance policies, pet insurance (at least through our carriers) is an excellent investment that will save you vast amounts of money over the life of your pet.
We offer reasonably priced options that actually cover claims - for example, FIGO, based out of Chicago. They require us to establish a baseline - a clean bill of health from a vet, and no preexisting conditions - but after the policy has been in effect for a few months, you can make a claim for any sort of accident or illness that may come up.
One could argue that it is too much work to obtain and keep track of all that information, but
our pet insurance carriers could not be easier to deal with. One of FIGO’s selling points they pride themselves on is the Pet Cloud. You can access and submit everything online and via text.
It is an especially good idea to get pet insurance on a new pet, at least for a couple of years, The rates will be lower when the pet is younger, and lighter. It is a great opportunity for anyone considering adding a new puppy or kitten to their family.
Just like with any other line of insurance, there are a lot of moving parts and variables that will shape your rates and what is and is not covered, but it is worth your time to get a quote. Vet bills aren’t cheap, and our pets deserve to get the best care. If the roles were reversed, they would do it for us.
