Rental Cars - Are They Covered under your Personal Auto Policy?

People ask me all the time - “Does my personal auto policy cover me when I am in a rental car?” Every customer, policy, and rental agreement is different, and every insurance carrier is a little bit different. We represent so many of them, and guidelines are rules are constantly evolving, so there is no one size fits all answer. Insurance is rarely that simple or straightforward. There are always lots of moving parts to take into consideration. I make a call to the carrier on behalf of every client who inquires so that I can give them a solid answer, but for the most part you personal auto policy will give you the exact same coverage you have for your car at home when you rent a car anywhere in the United States and Canada.

If you’re renting something you don’t have covered on your existing policy, for example, a motorcycle or scooter, you need to obtain some additional insurance for that rental.

Another fun insurance fact to consider - there are a few countries - Jamaica, Israel and Ireland, for example - have specific requirements that all but compel visiting Americans to purchase additional insurance when renting a car. These auto policies for rental cars can often be twice the cost of the actual rental. Some travel insurance and credit cards can cover the additional costs, but is definitely something you want to have us get sorted out for you before you leave the country.
